This Florida law severely limits local governments’ ability to help workers win higher pay, better benefits and safer workplaces. It will invalidate local “Living Wage” laws, which will allow companies contracting with governments to cut pay for tens of thousands of workers around the state. The law has also prohibited “Fair Work Week” laws, which are meant to ensure hourly workers have predictable schedules that they can plan their lives around. And it has blocked local rules that would require employers with outdoor workers – like farming companies, homebuilders and construction firms – to provide their workers with safety measures such as access to drinking water and periodic rest breaks, in order to prevent illness and injuries stemming from exposure to extreme heat.
