Hi Friends,
If you want a snapshot of what’s going on in Florida right now, just look at what’s on the agenda tomorrow at the State Capitol:
At 8:30 am, lawmakers are meeting to cut essential services.
At 9:00 am, they’re moving to illegally redraw our voting maps.
And by 11:00 am, they’ll consider appointing a CEO who profits from torture to a state university board.
Just another casual morning in our beloved state. Let’s get into it.
Property Tax Proposals (Defund Hospitals and Firefighters)
12/10/25, 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM, Ways & Means Committee, Sumner Hall- 404 House Office Building (400 S Monroe St, Tallahassee, FL 32399)
Friends, Republican leaders of the Florida State House want to eliminate property taxes for homesteads. Do NOT be fooled- this would mean gutting the essential services we rely on everyday like hospitals, firefighters, and disaster response—and ultimately increased costs for working Floridians.
Tax cuts have to be paid for somehow. And Florida loveeess making low and middle income people pay way more than the richest households- hence having the most regressive tax system in the country that relies heavily on sales tax.
The Florida Chamber of Commerce (2025) estimates that if policymakers pursue non-school property tax alone, the sales tax would have to increase to 8.85 percent. That means the burden would shift even more onto the people that need relief the most.
What we actually need is a policy like combined reporting that will make big corporations finally pay what they owe in taxes like the rest of us so we can fund all the public services that give us freedom. Florida is currently leaving $2.4 billion on the table every year by letting CEOs get away without paying the tab.
Florida For All’s Political Director testified in opposition to the proposals last week, stating that “I don’t know how we can include a retired billionaire who will not be paying taxes in with the same crowd as somebody on Meals on Wheels.”
One of the seven proposed constitutional amendments to cut property taxes in Florida, HJR 209, is headed to the Ways & Means Committee tomorrow and one step away from a vote on the House floor. HJR 209 could cost local governments approximately $8.8 billion every year.

Redistricting (Illegally Redraw Voting Maps)
12/10/25, 9:00 AM- 10:30 AM, House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting, Morris Hall- 17 House Office Building (400 S Monroe St, Tallahassee, FL 32399)
Florida Democrats and voting rights advocates have condemned DeSantis’ move to redistrict, arguing that redrawing the state’s congressional map to boost Republican wins would blatantly violate the 2010 Fair Districts amendment, which prohibits crafting any district or map “with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or incumbent.”
Before the first hearing last Thursday, a coalition of voting rights, civil rights, and community organizations showed up and showed out at the Capitol to denounce the redistricting.
As Amy Keith, Executive Director at Common Cause put it, “The number one issue facing Floridians is our affordability crisis. Legislators should be focused on that. Playing with map rigging is a waste of time and a sign they won’t put Floridians first.”
Attend the hearing if you can! Here are some suggested talking points from our friends at Common Cause. There may or may not be time for public comment. And here’s a linktree you can follow for more resources.
Tell your elected officials: We draw the line! Vote NO to rigging maps.
Senate Confirmation Hearing (For CEO Profiting From Torture)
12/10/25, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Senate Ethics & Elections Committee, Mallory Horne Committee Room, 37 Senate Building
Tina Vidal-Duart. If you haven’t heard the name by now, here’s what you need to know:
She’s a CEO and Republican mega-donor who profits from torture at the Everglades Detention Camp and has received hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars through no-bid contracts.
She sat on the board of the Hope Florida Foundation when DeSantis used the nonprofit to funnel millions meant for Medicaid patients into dark-money operations attacking citizen-led amendments to legalize recreational marijuana and protect abortion rights.
And now, as Gov. DeSantis pushes to appoint her to the Florida Atlantic University Board of Trustees, she’s refusing to answer basic questions during confirmation hearings.

During the last hearing in a Senate higher education committee, she didn’t even show up in person, and when only Democrat in the room, Sen. LaVon Bracy Davis of Orlando, pressed Vidal-Duart with pointed questions, focusing on her role on the board of the Hope Florida Foundation, Tina claimed she only recently learned that the organization lacked both bylaws and a conflict-of-interest policy, and then refused to give any answers.
