Dear Friends,
Since June 2025, the Florida State Legislature funneled $1.4 billion of taxpayer money to an emergency fund that DeSantis used to pay for the Everglades Detention Camp and the abuses of our neighbors. Although the state tried to obscure the contracts, it’s clear this money has been promised to corporations who’ve already profited from building detention camps and carrying out violent ICE activities.
Now they want to send close to half a billion more.
This Friday morning in Tallahassee, the Legislative Budget Commission made up of our state elected officials now takes up two additional requests. The first asks for $250 million in new budget authority plus the release of another $187.8 million to pay off pending invoices. The second moves $240 million in General Revenue into the Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund for “declared disasters,” which DeSantis has decided includes immigration.
In other words. today our state lawmakers will vote to commit another $500 million for corporations to profit from family separation and abuse through taxpayer-funded, no-bid contracts. This is about our cash, our communities, and our future.
Let them know we are paying attention.
The Legislative Budget Commission meets today, September 11 from 11 AM – 2 PM, so immediately call and email every member of the Commission and tell them to vote NO on both state budget amendments for the Division of Emergency Management.
Florida families demand safe neighborhoods, storm-ready communities, and disaster preparedness and relief, and the way we’ll do that is to stop funding attacks on our neighbors who are immigrants.
