Hi Friends,
Have you heard about Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful” tax bill?
Spoiler alert: it’s really just a massive giveaway to billionaires, and working families like ours are paying the price.
Taxes and budgets go hand in hand. They’re not just numbers on a page—they reflect our values. What our elected leaders choose to fund (or not) shows us exactly who they care about, and who they’re willing to sacrifice.
Budgets are politics without the BS.
Right now, there’s a major tax fight happening in Washington, D.C.—and it’s about you and the future of your community. Congress is in the middle of a process called budget reconciliation, and the U.S. House Budget Committee has made their priorities crystal clear: protect billionaires’ wealth over the well-being of working families.
🙅 Budgets Are About Choices. This One’s the Wrong One.
Instead of investing in people, right-wing leadership chose more giveaways to the rich, and communities in Florida and every corner of the country will suffer because of it.
In summary, the proposals passed by the Committee would:
Extend the failed 2017 Trump tax scam– costing $3.8 trillion made up primarily of extensions of the ‘temporary’ portions of the Trump tax cuts, which will overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest households
Keep loopholes for the rich— like the pass-through business deduction and corporate tax cuts, which have failed to boost wages or create good jobs. Over a ten-year period, the extension alone will cost just over $700 billion.
Increase the estate tax exemption— allowing multi-million dollar inheritances to go untaxed, costing us $212 billion over a ten-year period while everyday families continue to pay their share.
Create a tax on remittances– punishing workers who are immigrants who send funds back to their home countries.
Rollback investments to fight the climate crisis– by scaling back or repealing IRA clean energy credits, this proposal would threaten jobs, raise energy prices, and undermine state efforts to build a clean economy.
If that wasn’t dystopian enough, the language in this bill gives the Treasury Secretary sweeping power to label any nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization,” without any evidence or form of due process, and suspend their tax-exempt status without due process. This is a dangerous authoritarian move that opens the door for the government to target political opponents and shut down dissent. It’s a clear threat to organizers, unions, abortion funds, immigrant justice groups, and anyone who dares to dream of a better future for working people.
Meanwhile, the rest of the GOP budget is codifying deep cuts to health care, food assistance, and education by slashing programs our people depend on like Medicaid, SNAP, and Head Start– just to pay for the tax committee’s handouts to the rich!
For reference, here in Florida:
34% of people that are employed can’t afford the basics including housing, child care, food, and health care.
Nearly 2.3 million Floridians are facing hunger.
Medicaid and CHIP provide lifesaving health care to over 3.9 million Floridians– with 45% of children and 45% of births in the state covered by Medicaid.
SNAP reaches nearly 3 million children, seniors, veterans, and working parents in Florida– 59% of SNAP participants have children, and 41% of recipients are families with older adults or people who are disabled.
So this tax plan is stripping away essential services working people need just so billionaires can expand their yacht collection.
Everyday Americans are being asked to give up health care, food aid, public schools, and a livable planet just so billionaires can keep more of what they’ll never spend. It’s not just wrong, it’s unsustainable.
Plus, all cuts could be avoided altogether if we simply made big corporations and the ultra-rich pay what they owe like the rest of us. As we shared in a recent report, Florida has the potential to bring in an additional $2.4 billion in revenue every year just by closing corporate tax loopholes with a policy called combined reporting.
😰 Florida Can’t Afford This
The poorest Floridians already pay nearly five times more of their income in taxes than the richest. Meanwhile, state leaders refuse to make corporations and the wealthy pay what they owe—pushing Florida toward a deficit. And with about a third of our budget funded by the federal government, we’re especially vulnerable to the impact of major federal cuts.
That means this sharp shift in federal policy—slashing funding for healthcare, food assistance, education, and more while fueling trade wars, deportations, layoffs, and weaker tax enforcement—shrinks our revenue and puts our state budget at serious risk of deep shortfalls just as we’re expected to cover more of the costs.
In short, we’re being asked to do more with less.
🚨 We Only Have Days to Act
Nothing is final, but we need to apply pressure NOW. We expect the House will take a final vote on these tax cuts by the end of the week, with their self-imposed deadline set for Memorial Day. We’re calling on Florida’s Congressional Caucus TODAY to reject this billionaire handout, put working people first, and fund our futures.
We made it super easy! Just fill out the form below and an email will be sent directly to the elected officials representing you. It takes less than a minute: Tell Florida’s Congress: Fund Hardworking Families, Not Billionaires!
This tax fight, it’s not about party politics, it’s not about Trump or Elon Musk or any other billionaire—it’s about you, your family, and your community. It’s about whether you can get the care you need regardless of what job you have, whether you can provide a good life for your kids and aging parents, and whether you can live safely in a state that faces storms, extreme heat, and climate disasters every year.
Billionaires want you to believe that there isn’t enough to go around, but we know better. This money is ours and ours to take.
So share this message with your friends and family, and let’s do something about it! Together, we will build a state where hardworking people can enjoy the lives we’ve worked so hard to build.
Onwards and upwards,
Your Friends at Florida For All
