Dear Friends,
When Trump signed the Big Shitty Bill into law last summer, we called it for the simple truth that it was: extreme corporate-funded politicians choosing to trade life for death.
They left millions of Americans vulnerable to hunger and sickness by slashing health care, food assistance, and essential programs just to give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to their ultra-rich friends.
They simultaneously funneled record-high spending into the Pentagon, war, mass detention, and deportations — supercharging ICE, kidnapping innocent people, tearing families apart, and terrorizing our neighborhoods.
Well, only a week into 2026, all of this is already on full display. Let’s lay it out:
On Saturday, January 3, Trump bombs Venezuela, abducts their sitting president, and stages a full-blown spectacle of empire that threatens to destabilize all of Latin America and the Western Hemisphere. A hostile corporate takeover of a sovereign nation Trump says will now be “run” by his team, including Florida politician Marco Rubio, who has openly described plans to seize the world’s largest oil reserves and hand them to U.S. corporations. Another endless war means even fewer resources at home for the things working families rely on.
On Tuesday, January 6, Trump marks one of the most shameful days in U.S. history by cutting off $10 billion in critical child care funding to New York, California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota. This reckless attack weaponizes disinformation about Americans who are immigrants at the expense of children in their most critical years of development and parents who are already stretched thin. Another manufactured distraction that harms all working families, regardless of immigration status.
On Wednesday, January 7, an ICE agent murders Renee Good, mother of three, for standing witness to their assault on her immigrant neighbors. The killing is at least the ninth time federal immigration agents shoot at people since last September, and 2025 was the deadliest year for people in ICE custody in decades, with a third of deaths occurring in Florida. Extreme politicians are spreading lies and using the money from our pockets to unleash military force on anyone that disagrees with their agenda. Untrained, masked militias do not keep our communities safe.
On Thursday, January 8, the U.S. House votes to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits for millions of Americans whose health insurance costs could double this year thanks to that Big Shitty Bill. The impact is projected to be greatest here in Florida, which has the largest number of ACA enrollees of any state — more than 4.7 million.
Although a three-year extension of enhanced ACA tax credits advanced in the House with bipartisan support, the proposal will likely fail in the Senate. There’s some hope- there is word of lawmakers working on a compromise deal to address rising premiums. So, TODAY is a great time to call your elected officials.
In summary, the first week of 2026 was the result of Trump and Republicans in Congress choosing to protect massive tax giveaways for billionaires and corporations over the programs everyday people rely on to simply survive while pouring public money into tearing families apart and terrorizing communities through ICE raids, detention contracts, and militarized enforcement at home and abroad.
So to all the corporate-funded politicians of the U.S. government out there, y’all clearly have NO business running another country. You can’t even run your own.
Please look around and get your house in order. Nothing should matter more than ensuring people have healthcare, childcare, safe neighborhoods, and the basic conditions that make real freedom possible.
There is hope for real though.
In addition to bipartisan support for extending the ACA tax credits in the House, the Senate already advanced a bipartisan resolution to require congressional authorization for military force against Venezuela.
The American people are seeing the power structure for what it is. There is broad and deep-rooted anger growing at oligarchs and the makers of war. Another thing that happened in the first week of 2026: Zohran Mamdani took office as the next mayor of New York City. And that puts the establishment’s weakness—and the strength of organized, working people—on full display.
What comes next may be a messy, volatile period marked by reform, crisis, collapse, and realignment all at once. What’s different now is a growing willingness to see the world as it is, and imagine real alternatives.
