Florida For All Coalition Statement: Governor DeSantis’ Dangerous Pattern of Attacks on Democracy and the First Amendment

FLORIDA -- Today, a federal court has blocked a measure backed by Governor DeSantis that places restrictions on anti-discrimination training in the workplace. The judge found the new law to be a blatant violation of the First Amendment stating, “if Florida truly believes we live in a post-racial society, then let it make its case. But it cannot win the argument by muzzling its opponents.” From the anti-protest law to the unprecedented removal of twice-elected state attorney Andrew Warren, Florida’s Governor has a pattern of abusing political power to violate First Amendment rights, the United States and Florida Constitutions, and attack democracy.

The Florida For All coalition offered the following:

“Once again, Governor DeSantis’ blatant attacks on the First Amendment have been ruled unconstitutional in court. Every Floridian deserves the freedom to work hard and provide for their families without facing discrimination and harassment because of who they are, where they come from, or what they look like. But Governor DeSantis wants to distract us from his failure to address the real challenges facing our state, including skyrocketing rents, out of control property insurance rates, and a massive teacher shortage at the beginning of the school year. While this Governor spends his time trying to silence anyone who disagrees with his extreme and divisive agenda, we are sending a message that we will continue to fight for the rights of every Floridian to make their voices heard. Real change is coming at the ballot box in November.”
